报告题目：From Calculus to Applied Mathematics Research-A Case Study

摘要：In this talk I shall show you by an example on how to apply the idea behind a mathematical construct to solve an advanced research problem; I shall apply the definition of integration from your calculus textbook to derive an asymptotic formula for the q-Gamma function as q tends to 1. Students of mathematics major often find the transition from mathematical learning to doing research pretty hard, and the theorems they learned rarely applied directly. The truth is in most cases you can only apply the ideas behind the theorems; that is why a competent university mathematics education promotes understanding instead of memorization.
